The 3 of Us

The last few months have been really fun. Matt’s been off on paternity leave, and I have been off as well, so we’ve really been enjoying bonding as a family. Having your first baby is quite the transition – and in our case specifically, to go from being a married couple for 6 years and then having your first baby and now being your own family – it was so wonderful to both have time off to adapt to these changes together!

We have been visiting friends and family in the Niagara region every month or so, which is awesome because Levi has some grandparents, GREAT grandparents, aunts, uncle AND sweet cousins (also boys 🙂 ) to interact with! We went to check out the local zoo, and have been on many walks exploring different parks. He’s just at such a fun age and his personality is starting to shine through. He loves to giggle and explore absolutely everything around him! He just started this drag crawl (army crawl? 🙂 ) and is starting to get around the house. I’m both excited and slightly terrified to see him as a fully mobile toddler 😉 .He is now drinking a bit from his sippy cup and eating some solids – he always seems so eager to try new things! I’m quite proud of our little guy 😀 .

The other week we got some wonderful family photos taken by Laura Fretz Photography, which was perfect as I wanted some updated shots for our gallery wall!

I am definitely looking forward to what Summer brings and we are excited to introduce Levi to activities like picnicking, camping and going to the beach.

I hope you all are enjoying the sunshine this weekend!

Lemons & Homemade Lemonade

Mmm…there’s nothing quite like a cool, refreshing glass of that sweet and tangy lemonade on a warm Summer day. If it’s homemade, I think it’s even BETTER. I love lemonade. Pink lemonade. Yellow lemonade. From the can (frozen) or from the carton, I’ll drink it any way it’s served. But for a real treat, I thought I’d try my hand at homemade lemonade and – wow! It was amazing.

When it comes to a refreshing Summer-time drink, you can’t beat that glass of old-fashioned, fresh-squeezed lemonade <3. It’s tart, delicious and super easy to make! Just 3 easy steps and 3 ingredients. Look below for details 🙂 .

 Homemade Lemonade:

  • 1 c. sugar
  • 1 c. water
  • 5 lemons
  • 5 more cups of water

3 Easy Steps:

1. Simple syrup

2. Squeeze all the lemons

3. Mix it all together

Let’s start with the simple syrup:

This part always used to intimidate me a little. Just because I didn’t know what went into a “simple syrup”. But trust me, it couldn’t be more simple! It takes like, 2 minutes…

1. Combine 1 c. sugar with 1 c. water in a small pot and stir over medium heat until sugar has completely dissolved.

That’s it! 😀

2. Remove pot from element and let cool.

3. Begin squeezing lemons (If you don’t have a handy dandy lemon juicer – don’t fret! Read below)

Another method on how to juice a lemon:

1. Spear a lemon half with a fork.

2. Hold the lemon half in one hand and the fork in the other.

3. Squeeze the lemon in one hand while pumping the fork up and down with the other hand, as if it were the handle of a water pump.

4. Continue to squeeze until you’ve extracted all the lemon juice that you can!

Continue making lemonade:

1. Pour the lemon juice through a strainer, and mash the pulp around to get every last drop of that lemony goodness 🙂 .

2. Pour your lemon juice into a pitcher and add those 5 cups of water.

3. Add as much or as little of that simple syrup as you like.

4. Pop it in the fridge to chill, or serve immediately over ice!

The nice thing about making your own is that you can sweeten it as much as you like. We have an infuser pitcher which has a column in the middle that allows you to add fruit. I can make infused water, or fruit juice fruitier, which is nice. So I fill it with lemon slices to make lemonade that much tangier 😉 .You can always float extra lemon wedges/slices in whatever pitcher you have to give it that extra zing!

I was shocked and delighted at how easy it was to make your own. And what to do with those lemon rinds? Well, you could always wash them out, fill them with water and put them in muffin tins. Stick them in the freezer overnight and you have icy lemon cups to toss into a fruit punch or jug of ice water. Or not, but the option is there 😉 .

Oh, and this week I’m 14 weeks!! Which according to Google searches means Baby K is the size of a lemon. Whad’ya know! 😀 Happy Thursday friends.

11 Weeks Down & Counting

How far along –  11 weeks!
Total weight gain/loss 0 lbs.
Stretch marks No (and hopefully none to come!!)
Favourite moment this week – When Matt excitedly asks, “How’s our baby doing?!” 🙂
Miss Anything Was a little bummed this week when we realized, hey, we won’t be able to go to an amusement park this Summer with friends. (I suppose we COULD, but I’d be limited to what I could do, and would the cost of a ticket even be worth it for me?)
Movement – None yet! Can’t wait to feel those kicks though!
Food cravings – Toasted tomato sandwiches, dill pickles and ice cream – yum!
Anything making you queasy or sick – Still not digging meat too much. Although I have been having a hankering for chicken wings….
Have you started to show yet – Matt sees a bump! It’s a little one

Entering the Double Digits

Hey friends! Sorry I’ve been MIA! 🙂 Matt has been busy driving to work on another base and staying there for days at a time. We’re still living in the base rental on the base he trained at, so I’ve been holding down the fort while he’s gone away. 😉 We are anxious to move into the new house and get settled into a routine there. I plan to go back to work for a bit, which will help us with income when refinishing the basement there. So, I’ve been looking for work on my spare time. Also, I have been researching a bit about baby…what to register for, how we’ll set up the nursery, etc… We have names picked out already for baby K – whether it’s a boy OR girl :). We plan to find out the gender and do a gender reveal party of sorts. I DO love a good party 😀 !

I’m currently on the waitlist for a midwife, which is kind of a bummer, but something we’re still hopeful with and will continue to pray about. I’m 2nd from the top of the list, so fingers crossed!! Also, we are going for our first ultrasound next Tuesday – which we are super excited for! I was supposed to have one June 20th but thankfully, we were able to bump it up. I also need to go for an eye exam because when you have a pituitary tumour, I guess being pregnant can affect your vision. So that appointment will be later in July.

I’ve seen this idea all over and think it’s so cute! Not positive if I’ll keep posting the weekly pictures, but we’ll see how it all pans out 😉 . A week late, but here’s my 10 week photo! Double digits, feeling good and nearing the end of my first trimester. I’ll share the ultrasound next week :).

10 weeks

Not too much of a baby bump yet! I think the chalkboard pregnancy tracker is a cute, creative way to chart the milestones during my pregnancy.

Favorite moment this week – Rescheduling our first ultrasound (June 20th) to June 2nd! And finding out that military members can get FREE 3D ultrasounds!! 😀
Miss Anything Not really.
Movement – None yet! Although apparently the embryo is now a fetus and is moving around inside there!

Food cravings – I have been craving carbs, starch, and fruit (mostly strawberries)
Anything making you queasy or sick – I was a bit nauseous in the beginning, having strong food aversions… and felt quite tired! At this point I am happy to say I feel like I’m getting my energy level back.
Have you started to show yet – Slightly! I cant wait to have a bump!!
